A bit of quick thinking may have saved NYPD Sgt. Michael Miller's life, even if it did completely mess up his finger.

Miller was involved in a struggle with a man in Brooklyn last Saturday when the dude pulled out a gun while they were trying to cuff him and proceeded to point it at him and his partner. In an effort not to, well, die, Miller quickly stuck his finger between the hammer and cylinder of the gun when the guy tried to fire it.

Doctors say the bone in his finger split at the tip from the impact. Miller says that he just felt "a real sharp burning pain," which is pretty damn lucky because that shit sounds like it should probably hurt like hell.

The gunman was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, along with criminal possession of a weapon and a controlled substance.
