Soon after James Franco accepted the Best Actor Golden Globe for The Disaster Artist while wearing a Time's Up pin, The LA Times published five women's accounts of sexual misconduct at his hands. Now, it looks like he won't get the same acknowledgment at the Oscar's. The nominees have been announced, and Franco's not among them.
The Disaster Artist received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy; it's not among the Oscars' nine Best Picture nominees this year. Franco won the Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical; here, he's absent. Competing for Best Actor will be Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name), Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), and Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.). Maybe that means Get Out has a chance of winning an Oscar after being overlooked at the Golden Globes.
In the LA Times report, four former students and one mentee of Franco's accused him of things like pressuring actresses to undress and getting rid of a plastic guard during a simulated oral sex scene. In the wake of these accusations, Franco received considerable backlash for displaying support for Time's Up. "How could a person publicly stand by an organization that helps to provide support for victims of sexual assault while privately preying on people who have no power?" Scarlett Johansson recently said at the Women's March. In addition, The New York Times canceled a Franco-centric talk about The Disaster Artist.
After women started tweeting about these accusations, Franco said on the Late Show, "The things that I heard that were on Twitter are not accurate, but I completely support people coming out and being able to have a voice, because they didn't have a voice for so long. So I don't wanna shut them down in any way."
Other names you might be surprised not to hear at the ceremony are Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Gal Gadot, Michelle Williams, and Tiffany Haddish.
