"In a city where the beaches are shoulder-to-shoulder, the main forms of transportation are in somebody else's dirty car or in a claustrophobic tube, and people save room with bed/dining room table/desk combo furniture, space is always extremely limited. If you can't actually leave the city to breathe, the best way is to rise above it, literally. Rooftops give you the best open-air setting you'll find in a city, and it's hard to beat drinking a beer while looking at the vast Manhattan skyline.
