Katy Perry covers the June 29th issue of the Hollywood Reporter, and says that her upcoming film, "Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D" (due in theaters domestically on July 5th), cost her $2 million of her own hard-earned dollars to make.
The bulk of the cash— along with some from AEG Live— reportedly went to shooting her November concert at L.A.'s Staple Center in 3D.
"My frugal business manager [Bernie Gudvi of GSO Business Management], God bless him, was sweating," she says. "And I was like, 'Please trust me.' That's kind of been the mantra I've said to everyone my whole life: 'Trust me, I have a vision.'"
The impetus for the film seems to be Perry's desire to show her fans that she's something more than what she appears to be— a 27-year-old singer who earned $44 million last year, all while smiling and having a good time. This, despite the fact that her personal life was cratering.
Although we haven't seen the film, the article cites a scene where Perry is having a breakdown backstage at a show, and has to get it together to go perform.
"What was going on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eye sockets and not my false lashes just as I'm about to go up on that ramp and sing 'Teenage Dream,' " she says. "I had to smack myself across the face and say, 'These problems are my problems, they are not my audience's problems, learn to separate that.'"
Hopefully the money she spent on the film helps her get her point across.
