There's this common misconception that Pokémon designs used to be really good.
And it's only with later games did they start turning to crap like inanimate objects and piles of trash. So let's be clear right off the bat: that's bullshit.
Just look at all the first-gen Pokémon, from the Red and Blue games that launched in 1996, that are here on this list for proof of that. Pokémon designs have always been sort of janky, and that's a fact.
Of course this is all just nitpicking. The majority of Pokémon, even the new ones, are incredibly imaginative. That's even more true when you consider that there are over 700 of them at this point, and these 15 are the only ones to complain about.
OK, so they're not the only ones. They're definitely the worst, though.

The inanimate-objects-as-Pokémon thing was old the very first time you were surprised that a floating Pokéball named Electrode had jumped up off the ground to zap your nuts. And now, almost 20 years later, there is a Pokémon based on a key ring. FFS.
Dunsparce
First appearance: Pokémon Gold and Silver
Year: 1999
Here's a question: what even is Dunsparce? No, seriously. What the hell is this nightmarish thing? It looks like something out of an H.P. Lovecraft story right before it transforms into something even worse and drives you insane with one look.
Tentacool

One look at that fucking face is all you need to let you know that this jellyfish is anything but cool.

All I can think of when I see this totally flat Pokémon's name is "stink fist." And that is a huge problem.
Klinklang

Because having a Pokémon based on a pair of magnets wasn't bad enough, here's one based on a pair of gears. How creative.
Vanilluxe

The only thing better than one scoop is two! That logic is unfortunately flawed, because literally anything would have been better than a Pokémon that looks like a fucking ice cream cone.
Magikarp
First appearance: Pokémon Red and Blue

It doesn't matter that you evolve into Gyarados, Magikarp. You'll still always be a loser as far as I'm concerned.
Probopass

Making a Pokémon out of a giant nose is one thing, but putting a bushy '70s porn star 'stache on it is crossing a line.
Cofagrigus
First appearance: Pokémon Black and White

Somebody thought they were really clever naming this idiotic Egyptian ghost with a portmanteau of "coffin" and "sarcophagus." Then they said it out loud, but it must have been too late to change the translation by then.
Muk

Is there a single more useless Pokémon than the one that's literally just a pile of goo? (Hint: the answer is on the next slide.)
Garbodor

Of course there is. Meet Garbodor. It is a bag of garbage. A. Bag. Of. Garbage. Nothing but trash here—nothing at all.
