Pokemon's First Appearance: Pokemon Gold, Silver & Crystal

This half Flying, half Psychic Pokemon has a decent combination of non-damaging and damaging moves (including Hyper Beam, Solar Beam, Psychic and Fly), as well as a decent base stat total (470). Unfortunately, it's weakened by several types of attacks including Rock, Ghost, Electric, Dark and Ice. Other than that Xatu is either damaged normally by other attacks, or resistant to them.

What's common among most Normal-type Pokemon (as you'll see on the rest of this list) is that they're all nearly invincible. This is almost the case with Porygon. It has great power, speed and stamina, and can learn an assortment of non-damaging and damaging moves. Porygon's only real cons are its low base stat total (395), and it's being weak against Fighting attacks. (And the fact that it looks like pieces of pink and blue rock candy.)

As a Pokemon heavily dependent on Fighting attacks, Hitmonlee could easily be quite the competitor for Pokemon weak against Fighting attacks. (It also helps that its speed and power is impressive, too.) However, Hitmonlee is very limited in what it can do. Most of its non-damaging and damaging moves are either Fighting or Normal-based, which means it wouldn't last too long against Psychic and Flying-type Pokemon and attacks. (These are Hitmonlee's weaknesses.) Sure, it's either damged normally by other attacks or resistant to them, but Hitmonlee's lack of assorted moves makes it less appealing than other Fighting-based Pokemon. (It has great kicks, though. We'll give it that.)

Ah, Jynx. Sure, it's probably one of the strangest-looking Pokemon out there, but it can handle its own better than you may think. Its half Ice, half Psychic setup allows it know everything from Blizzard and Icy Wind to Psychic and Dream Eater. (And even some Fighting-type moves, too.) Unfortunately, Jynx's base stats aren't that great (455), and it's weakened by several different types of attacks. At least Jynx can proudly say that it's the only Pokemon rocking a dress.

Sure, Celebi isn't the most powerful Pokemon on this list (it's practically weak to almost every Pokemon type), but this half Grass, half Psychic creature is nearly unmatched in speed, skill and stamina. It has a decent selection of non-damaging and damaging moves (such as Solar Beam and Psychic), and has one of the best base stat totals of any Pokemon. (600 to be exact.) Plus, it's adorable.

Just when we thought Scyther couldn't get any cooler the second generation of Pokemon games gave us Scizor, a much stronger and red alternative to our green, Bug-type companion. Although Scizor doesn't have the best selection of non-damaging and damaging moves, its base stat total (500) is impressive and it's resistant to several different types of attacks. But Scizor's biggest weakness? Fire. Fire attacks do four times as much damage to Scizor than non-Fire attacks. In other words, if you're going toe-to-toe with a Magmar or Charizard, expect your Scizor to come out a little crispy by the end of the battle.

What's great about this half Steel, half Flying Pokemon is that it's almost resistant to every type of attack in the series. Normal? Not a problem. Dragon? Probably won't even leave a scratch. Psychic? Nope. But with such an advantage comes a list of disadvantages. Skarmory's base stat total is low (465) and it doesn't have the ability to learn an assortment of non-damaging and damaging attacks. Plus, its weaknesses are Fire and Electric-type Pokemon and attacks. Yes, Skarmory is strong but it could also be taken down by, say, Ninetales. (Hint, hint.)

Ninetales has a good base stat total (505) but that's really it. It lacks an assortment of well-rounded non-damaging and damaging moves, and is also weak against Ground, Rock and Water-type Pokemon and attacks. Sure, Ninetales could turn Skarmory into a hot pile of crispy meat (and turn its steel into plates and silverware), but there are better Fire-type Pokemon worth having on your team such as, say, Magmar. (Hint, hint.)

Although somewhat similar to Ninetales, at least Magmar has some attacks that aren't solely Fire-based. Through moves such as a Dynamic Punch and Thunder Punch, Magmar is able to do a little bit more than his nine-tailed friend. Sure, Magmar's base stat total (495) is lower than Ninetale's and they're both weakened by the same types of Pokemon and attacks, but Margmar arguably has the better advantage.

As a half Water, half Electric Pokemon, Lanturn is one of the most contradictory Pokemon on this list. But it works to its advantage: the creature can unleash attacks such as Surf and Hydro Pump, and Thunder and Zap Cannon. Plus, its only true weaknesses are Ground and Grass attacks, which means it's normally damaged by other attacks or nearly resistant to them. Not bad for a Pokemon with a base stat total of 460, and whose attacks should turn them into a fried fish.

Rather than being resistant to nearly every type of attack in the series, Electabuzz is normally damaged by most of them. It can also learn a combination of non-damaging and damaging moves that aren't solely Electric-based including Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Iron Tail and Dynamic Punch. Even its base stat total (490) is good. Electabuzz's only real problem is that it's weak against Ground-type Pokemon and attacks. Other than that Electabuzz is a Pokemon worth having on your team.

Similar to Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan is weakened, damaged normally by and is resistant to the same Pokemon and attacks. But where Hitmonchan differs is in its own attacks. Although they're primarily Fighting-based Hitmonchan can learn attacks such as Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, Ice Punch and Mega Punch, which gives it a little more variation on who it could possibly take out. Sure, Hitmonchan's base stat total isn't too great (455), but its assorted types of punches definitely helps.

Machamp is sheer brute force at its finest in the Pokemon series. It's the Goro of Pokemon, and uses some of the series' most powerful attacks to take down its opponents. Similar to Hitmonchan, Machamp has his own set of punches that aren't solely Fighting-based. It could deal some damage to those weak against Ice attacks with Ice Punch, and it could deal some damage to those weak against Fire attacks with Fire Punch. And to top it all off Machamp has a base stat total of 505. Sure, it's weak against the same Pokemon types and attacks as Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee. but Machamp could still hold its own against a lot of Pokemon.

Don't let Misdreavus' small appearance fool you: it could probably take out a Machamp. How? Well, Misdreavus is immune to Fighting-type Pokemon and attacks, and it uses a handful of Psychic-based attacks. (Which is one of Machamp's weaknesses.) However, Misdreavus doesn't have that great of a selection with non-damaging and damaging moves, and its base stat total is really low (435). It's also weak against Ghost and Dark-type Pokemon and attacks. Yes, we're wondering the same thing you are: how is Misdreavus weak against Ghost-type Pokemon and attacks when it's a Ghost Pokemon? The world may never know.

Yes, Mr. Mime is weird looking, but it's also equipped with a good selection of non-damaging and damaging moves. Although primarily Psychic-based, Mr. Mime can learn attacks such as Solar Beam, Thunder, Ice Punch and Fire Punch. But with its abilities to learn a lot also comes some disadvantages. Mr. Mime has a low base stat total (460) and is weak against Bug, Ghost and Dark-type Pokemon and attacks. However, Mr. Mime could still be Mr. Kickass solely because of how varied its moves are.

Even before actually seeing what Alakazam is capable of, you get a sense that this Pokemon means business because of its intimidating mustache and the fact that it's holding two spoons. Similar to Mr. Mime, Alakazam can learn certain non-damaging and damaging moves that aren't solely Psychic-based. They're weakened by the same types of Pokemon and attacks, but fortunately Alakazam's base stat total is 30 points higher than Mr. Mime's. When you encounter Alakazam in battle you better be ready, because it's not going to give you a spoonfed battle. (Ha, get it? Ok, we're sorry.)

Pokemon's red-eyed, ghoulish creature is a nightmare to most of its opponents for a reason. Along with knowing a handful of Ghost attacks, Gengar can do Thunder, Fire, Grass, Fighting and Psychic attacks, too. Its base stat total (500) is good, and it's immune to Normal, Fighting and Ground attacks. However, similar to Misdreavus, Gengar is weak against Ghost and Dark attacks, and Psychic attacks, too. Regardless, Gengar is still a Pokemon worthy of being a part of your team.

Slowbro always looks confused and absolutely unaware of what is going on around it. But underneath its aloofness is a Pokemon that can deal some damage. With a base stat total of 490 Slowbro can unleash everything from Water and Fire attacks to Electric and Bug attacks. His speed, stamina and power is also good, and he's even resistant to several types of attacks. However, Slowbro also has multiple weaknesses: Bug, Ghost, Grass, Electric and Dark-type attacks are powerful against the half Water, half Psychic Pokemon. Maybe Slowbro should change its name to "Strongbro." Right? No? Oh, ok.

The only major difference between Porygon 2 and the first Porygon is that the former's stat base total is much higher than the latter's. (Porygon 2 is at 515.) Other than that a lot is still the same. Porygon 2 can learn an assortment of non-damaging and damaging moves, its speed, power and stamina is high and its also weak against Fighting attacks. (Oh yeah, Porygon 2 also looks like a duck instead of multiple pieces of blue and pink rock candy glued together.)

There's a reason why gym leader Jasmine has an Ampharos a part of her squad. It's normally damaged by just about every type of attack, can do Hyper Beam, Thunder, Dynamic Punch and Fire Punch, and has good stamina and power. (And also has a base stat total of 500.) Ampharos' only problems is that it's weak against Ground attacks, and its speed isn't that great. Other than that, Ampharos is one of the best Electric-based Pokemon out there.

Why is this Normal-type Pokemon fairly high on the list? Well, along with having a high base stat total (500), Ursaring can learn an assortment of non-damaging and damaging moves, is damaged normally by just about every type of attack and has good speed, stamina and power. Just to give you an idea of the attacks Ursaring can do: Dynamic Punch, Rollout, Zap Cannon, Hyper Beam, Dig, Ice Punch, Fire Punch and Fury Cutter. Insane? Yes. And Ursaring's only real disadvantage? It's weak against Fighting attacks. Yes, that's it. Talk about a deadly bear.

Houndoom is, in every way, Pokemon's dog from hell. From its appearance to its attacks Houndoom is deadly. Although most of Houndoom's major attacks are Dark types, it also knows Fire, Grass, Fighting and Steel attacks, and has a base stat total of 500. However, even this hell hound has its weaknesses. Houndoom is weak to Fighting, Ground, Rock and Water attacks. Just don't talk about Houndoom's weaknesses in front of it. You might regret it.

With a base stat total of 525 and good speed, power and stamina, Flareon is another great Fire-type Pokemon. But Flareon is more similar to Ninetales than Magmar because it lacks an assortment of different types of attacks. Flareon is also weak against Ground, Rock and Water attacks, which is why it's right behind its Water-based counterpart, Vaporeon.

Also with a base stat total of 525, Vaporeon specializes in Water attacks but can learn others attacks such as Iron Tail, Icy Wind, Surf and Hyper Beam, too. Unfortunately, Vaporeon's speed, power and stamina isn't that great, and it's weak against Grass and Electric attacks. We're pretty sure you know who's coming next...

Duh. Similar to its counterparts Jolteon also has a base stat total of 525, but that's the only similarity. Jolteon's speed, power and stamina is higher than Vaporeon's and Flareon's, and Jolteon is only weak against one type of attack: Ground. Another con that Jolteon has is its lack of varied types of attacks. It's unlike Electabuzz and Ampharos in that most of its attacks are Electric-based. Regardless, Jolteon will still put on a good fight.

With the second generation of Pokemon games came two new -eons: Espeon and Umbreon. (The latter didn't make it on the list, unfortunately.) The former is better than the previous three because it can learn attacks that each one is weak against. Espeon also has a 525 base stat total, as well as good speed, power and stamina. However, it is weak against Bug, Ghost and Dark attacks, and doesn't have a great selection of non-damaging and damaging moves. But it can kick the asses of Jolteon, Vaporeon and Flareon, which is what matters most.

Ok, so we lied: Umbreon is totally on here. (We have to make this list somewhat suspenseful!) Why is Umbreon the supreme leader of the other -eons? Well, it can learn attacks that each -eon is weak against. That's right: it can learn Mud Slide (a Ground attack that would be unpleasant for Flareon and Jolteon), Zap Cannon (an electric attack that would turn Vaporeon into fried catfish) and Faint Attack (a Dark attack that Espeon wouldn't be able to handle too many times). Umbreon also has a 525 base stat total, has the best power, speed and stamina of the -eons, and is only weak to Fighting and Bug attacks. Congrats, Umbreon: you've earned it.

As a half Water, half Ice Pokemon, Lapras can also learn a lot of useful non-damaging and damaging moves. Thunder, Blizzard, Solar Beam, Dragon Rage, Psychic, Iron Tail, Rock Smash--Lapras can learn an attack for just about every one of its opponent's weaknesses. As if Lapras couldn't get any better, it also has a base stat total of 535 and has great speed, power and stamina. However, it is weak against Fighting, Rock, Grass and Electric attacks. We knew it was too good to be true, but overall Lapras is still an incredible Pokemon.

Meganium, who's essentially Venusaur's equivalent, isn't that bad of a Pokemon. Its base stat total is 525 and has decent speed and power, but incredible stamina. However, Meganium is weak against Flying, Ice, Poison, Bug and Fire attacks, and doesn't have a great variety of non-damaging and damaging attacks. But let's address what's really on your mind. Is Meganium better than Venusaur? No, and here's why. Although both share some of the same weaknesses, Venusaur isn't weak against Poison attacks, and actually uses some Poitson attacks. (We'll let you connect the rest of the dots.)

Ah, Venusaur. Most of us grew up with this half Grass, half Poison Pokemon, and were beyond excited to use its Solar Beam attack against all of our opponents. (Regardless of if they were resistant to Grass attacks or not.) With a base stat total of 525 and good power, stamina and speed, Venusaur is an undeniably good Pokemon. But its lack of varied non-damaging and damaging attacks, and it being weak against Flying, Fire, Psychic and Ice attacks, takes away from its badass-ness. We're sorry to you Venusaur enthusiasts out there, but it's not the best Pokemon out there.

Yes, Kanghaskhan is better than Venusaur. Yes, we sense your anger and confusion but let us explain. Kanghaskhan can learn Fire and Ice attacks, both of which are weaknesses of Venusaur's. In other words, Venusaur would be a rotting plant by the time Kanghaskhan is done with it. Sure, Kanghaskhan's base stat total is lower than Venusaur's (and others on this list), and Kanghaskhan's power, speed and stamina isn't that great, too. But it's only weak against Fighting attacks, which Venusaur can't learn.

Trust us, we're pained that Charizard is in the top 20 and not top 10. But it has to be done. Charizard is one of the best out there: it's a half Dragon, half Fire monster that can do anything from Fissure and Hyper Beam to Dragon Rage and Dynamic Punch, and has great speed, power and stamina. But it's very weak to Rock attacks, taking four times as much damage than any other type of attack. Its 534 base stat total wouldn't save it from a barrage of Rock attacks from a Pokemon at the same experience level. Please don't scorch us with your flames, Charizard. We truly do love you.

Now, before you think we're trolling you, hear us out. Miltank is actually a total badass that would probably leave Charizard in absolute pain. Miltank can learn an attack for every one of Charizard's weaknesses, including its lack of immunity toward Rock attacks. And Miltank's speed, stamina and power isn't that bad, either. Sure, Miltank's base stat total is nowhere close to Charizard's, and Charizard can learn some Fighting attacks that could compete against Miltank, but Miltank would still probably come out on top.

Actually, having Typhlosion higher on this list than Charizard might be more offensive than Miltank's position. But Typhlosion is better. For one, although Typhlosion and Charizard are weak against the same attacks, Typhlosion isn't very weak against Rock attacks. It can actually learn Electric and Rock attacks, both of which Charizard is weak against. Plus, Typhlosion shares the same base stat total as Charizard, and its power is off the chain. (We unfortunately can't say the same for its speed and stamina, though.) Congrats, Typhlosion. You're better than Charizard.

Feraligatr being better than Typhlosion shouldn't come as a surprise. Although the former's base stat total is four points lower than the latter's, it can learn attacks for two of Typhlosion's weaknesses. (Where Typhlosion can only learn attacks for one of Feraligatr's weaknesses.) Feraligatr also has incredible speed, power and stamina. Sure, Feraligatr's attacks aren't that varied but its overall power helps it compete against most of the Pokemon on here.

How does Blastoise come out on top as the quintessential starter Pokemon, especially against Feraligatr? Both are weak against the exact same attacks and have the same power level. But Blastoise has Fissure, one of the most deadly attacks a part of the Pokemon series. The closest Feraligatr has to Fissure is Hyper Beam. We're taking a leap of faith with this one over the other Pokemon we've selected, and if you disagree we can battle each other someday.

This once-fossilized Pokemon is incredible. With a 515 base stat total and impressive speed, Aerodactyl is a Pokemon you'll be glad you took out of its amber prison. It also has some decent attacks such as Hyper Beam, Dragon Rage and Earthquake. Unfortunately, its overall range of moves aren't that great, and it's weak against Rock, Steel, Water, Electric and Ice attacks. But the fact that this Pokemon was once a fossil almost makes up for its cons...almost...ok, not really.

Cute and deadly, there's a reason why Elite Four's Lance saves his Dragonite for last. It's a very powerful Pokemon with a 600 base stat total, and an assortment of non-damaging and damaging attacks including Hyper Beam, Thunder, Rock Smash and Fire Punch. Unfortunately, Dragonite is very weak against Ice attacks, taking four times more damage than other types of attacks.

Who would've known that underneath Magikarp's uselessness was a half Dragon, half Water monster that serves as one of Pokemon's most vicious creatures? Gyarados is awesome for so many reasons. From its appearance to its assortment of attacks (Hydro Pump, Hyper Beam, Blizzard, Thunder, Fire Blast) Gyarados is undeniably powerful. (It has a 540 base stat total.) But its biggest setback is that it's very weak against Thunder attacks, taking four times more damage than other types of attacks. So, how does Gyarados win over Dragonite? Gyarados can learn attacks for two of Dragonite's weaknesses, including its weakness against Ice. Dragonite can only learn attacks for one of Gyarados' weaknesses. Articuno is obviously so high on this list for a reason. It's one of the legendary bird Pokemon, has a base stat total of 580, has good speed, power and stamina, and some powerful attacks. However, it's very weak against Rock attacks, taking four times more damage than other types of attacks. It's also weak against Steel, Fire and Electric attacks. Even legends have their weaknesses.

So, how does Moltres top Articuno when they both have similar weaknesses (they're both very weak against Rock attacks) and the same base stat total? Well, neither one can take advantage of the other's weakness to Rock attacks. Articuno can take advantage of Moltres' weakness to Water attacks, but Moltres can take advantage of Articuno's weaknesses to Fire and Steel attacks. Therefore, Moltres would probably burn Articuno alive in a last Pokemon flying battle.

Both Ho-oh and Moltres share the exact same weakness but that's their only real similarity. Ho-oh has 100 points more for its base stat total than Moltres, and can actually take advantage of Moltres' weakness to Thunder attacks. Ho-oh can also learn an assortment of moves which makes it a threat to a handful of different Pokemon. Considering Ho-oh is the "guardian of the skies," it only makes sense that it's a pretty powerful Pokemon.

Once again, hear us out. We're totally aware that Snorlax is one of the laziest Pokemon in existence. But he's also very powerful. Similar to Miltank Snorlax can learn non-damaging and damaging moves of all types, and is only weak against Fighting attacks. Its 540 base stat total and near-perfect power and stamina make Snorlax a competitor for anyone that dares to challenge it. Look at it this way: Snorlax's Roll Out attack could take out Ho-Oh, Moltres and Articuno with absolute ease because it's a Rock attack. Sure, Snorlax's speed isn't that great but that's really all you have to deal with. We should all strive to be Snorlax: lazy as hell but surprisingly awesome.

Although Entei (and the other legendary dog Pokemon) was an absolute pain in the ass to capture, it was totally worth it all when we finally caught it. With a 580 base stat total and perfect speed, power and stamina, Entei is in a league of its own. However, it lacks an assortment of moves and is weak against Ground, Rock and Water attacks. But it looks cool so that at least makes up for its lack of moves a little bit.

In many ways Suicune shouldn't be the second best legendary dog Pokemon. Although it shares the same base stat total as Entei, Suicune's power and speed isn't perfect like Entei's. But Suicune can learn both Water and Ground attacks, which are some of Entei's weaknesses. Aside from that, Suicune is weak against Grass and Electric attacks, and doesn't have a great assortment of moves. We guess that's the price to pay when owning a legendary dog Pokemon.

Why is Raikou the top dog? (No pun intended.) Although both Raikou and Suicune have attacks for one of each other's weaknesses, and they both have a base stat total of 580, Raikou's speed and stamina is much better than Suicune's. We're sure Suicune would put up a good fight, but we're going with Raikou. Similar to its fellow legendary dogs Raikou doesn't have an assortment of moves, but it's still a really good Pokemon.

Zapdos topping three legendary bird Pokemon and three legendary dog Pokemon makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Granted, Zapdos going against Suicune would be interesting since they both have attacks for one of each other's weaknesses, and they both have a base stat total of 580. We obviously think that Zapdos would win because its speed is better than Suicune's, and Electric attacks sound much more displeasing than Ice attacks. And Zapdos against Raikou? No contest. At least Zapdos would be able to take advantage of Raikou's weakness to Ground attacks. Raikou can't learn any attacks to take advantage of Zapdos' weakness to Rock and Ice attacks. Sure, Zapdos doesn't have a great assortment of moves, but it's an electrified powerhouse for sure.

Lugia triumphs the legendary bird and dog Pokemon for multiple reasons. Not only is its speed, stamina and power good, but it can learn attacks for one of each legendary Pokemon's weaknesses. Blizzard? RIP, Zapdos. Earthquake? Laters, Raikou and Entei. Zap Cannon? Peace out, Suicune. Ancient Power? Hasta la vista, Ho-Oh, Moltres and Articuno. Lugia could take out just about any Pokemon, really. The creature's only real problem is that it's weak against Rock, Dark, Ghost, Electric and Ice attacks. But it could obviously hold its own with a base stat total of 680. Looks like the "guardian of the seas" rules all. Well, almost all.

Pokemon's First Appearance: Pokemon Red, Blue & Yellow

On the off chance that Mewtwo actually exists somewhere on this planet, maybe it'll see its position on our list and spare us. But seriously, Mewtwo is almost invincible. Its base stat total is 680, its speed, power and stamina is good, and it can learn so many moves. Just about every Pokemon on this list would have some trouble going toe-to-toe with this Psychic Pokemon. Its only real problem is that it's weak against Bug, Ghost and Dark attacks. Other than that, Mewtwo could probably enslave every Pokemon in existence. But remember the first Pokemon movie? You know, the one where a special, little pink someone saved the world from absolute destruction? Yes, that's right...

Pokemon's First Appearance: Pokemon Red, Blue & Yellow

Of course Mew is at the top of our list. The genderless creature can learn every single TM and HM move in both Generation I and II Pokemon games. We know what you're thinking: incredible. We can only agree. Of course with such a big advantage comes a set of problems. Mew's power isn't that great and although it has a base stat total of 600 it doesn't really peak much higher at levels 50 through 100. Mew is also weak against Bug, Ghost and Dark attacks. But imagine owning a Pokemon that could learn anything and everything. Sure, only through a glitch in the series could you obtain the mighty Mew, but it was worth it. Mew earns our spot for Best Pokemon.
