Gallery: The 25 Craziest Roger Corman Movie Posters

Roger Corman’s legacy can’t be overstated, yet, ironically, few people outside of Hollywood’s elite give the man his proper due. But the historical facts speak for themselves; as one of cinema’s most successful independent producer-directors, Corman spent the 1960s and ’70s mentoring, and subsequently giving first directorial jobs to, filmmaking titans such as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, and Jonathan Demme. As a director, the warm-hearted and fun-loving Corman also gave then-unknown actors Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone, and Robert De Niro their earliest roles, albeit in schlocky B-movies with titles like The Cry Baby Killer, Death Race 2000, and Bloody Mama.

Looking back on Corman’s illustrious career, it makes sense that many of film’s biggest names crossed his path at one point: Since 1954, the tireless maverick has either produced or personally shot nearly 400 genre flicks. Do the math—that’s an average of nearly seven movies a year. That insane work ethic is just one of the many topics covered in the excellent new documentary Corman’s World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel, directed by Alex Stapleton. Featuring interviews with Scorsese, De Niro, and Nicholson, amongst others including Corman himself, Corman’s World (which opens in limited release this Friday) recounts the man’s storied life in intimate and vastly entertaining fashion.
