It's the end of the year, and as always, there's gaming news and rumors abound. We're already looking ahead to the release of Doom Eternal in November and The Last of Us: Part II in February, but never fear: there are plenty of fall releases to tide you over until then. 

Every month has its high-profile re-releases and re-masterings (ports of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 are coming to the Switch on October 29), but October has several new titles, specifically in the first-person shooter genre, that are worth your time and money. From new console releases to highly-anticipated games like Luigi's Mansion 3, October is teeming with exciting release dates and free video games from Xbox Gold and Playstation Plus.

'Tembo the Badass Elephant' (Oct. 1—31)

A platformer and side scroller, this title features visually arresting comic book graphics that draw the player in, and a gameplay style that's been compared to Crash Bandicoot and Sonic the Hedgehog

'Friday the 13th: The Game' (Oct. 16—Nov. 15)

This multiplayer experience casts the player as either a Crystal Lake Camp Counselor or Jason himself. It’s an elaborate game of cat and mouse: kill or be killed. Perfect teamwork is required to turn the tables on one of horror's greatest villains.

'Disney's Bolt' (Oct. 1—Oct. 15)

Based on the Disney animated feature of the same name, Bolt allows you to play as the titular superdog, who uses his special powers to fight crime along with his best friend Penny.

'Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge' (Oct. 16—Oct. 31)

An expanded edition of Ninja Gaiden 3, Razor's Edge once again stars legendary ninja Ryu Hayabusa. It includes all previously released downloadable content (DLC) and better graphics than its 2012 predecessor.

'The Last of Us: Remastered' (Oct. 1—Nov. 4)

This game puts you in the role of Joel, a grizzled mercenary whose job is to protect Ellie, a girl who may hold the key to the virus that has destroyed humanity. The Last of Us: Remastered is widely considered to be one of the greatest video games in history. It’s the perfect way to get ready for The Last of Us: Part II, due out on February 21.

'MLB The Show 19' (Oct. 1—Nov. 4)

An elite baseball simulator, MLB The Show 19 allows you to play as any major league baseball team. It also includes a new "Moments" mode, which allows you to relive and play out the great moments in the sport's history.

'Destiny 2: Shadowkeep' (Oct. 1)

We're starting Year Three of Destiny 2—part of a five-year expansion plan that began in 2017—and the first-person, open-world game is finally going to the moon, with a map that's twice the size as the original moon map in Destiny. The new Shadowkeep downloadable content (DLC) promises to be one of the biggest expansions in the game's history, and includes a revamped armor system and the introduction of finishing moves during combat. 

Microsoft Surface Unveiling (Oct. 2)

The upcoming Microsoft event in New York is rumored to take a closer look at the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, the latest in a line of high-end laptop/tablet hybrids. Expect gamers and game creators alike to take full advantage of applications.

New York Comic-Con (Oct. 3—Oct. 6)

New York Comic-Con is a celebration of nerd culture: everything from sci-fi movies to anime television shows to upcoming video games. Last year, Kingdom Hearts III was a playable demo on the show floor. This year, be prepared for additional announcements and gameplay opportunities.

'Ghostbusters: Remastered' (Oct. 4)

Long considered the unofficial third movie in the Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: The Video Game featured the voices and likenesses of Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson. The announcement of the new Ghostbusters 2020 film, starring Akroyd, Murray, and Hudson, gives this remastered edition some additional hype.

'Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint' (Oct. 4)

A tactical shooter that pits you against the military-industrial complex, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint features four distinct classes of player to choose from: Field Medic, Assault, Panther, and Sharpshooter. Each has its own special abilities, but shares the same skill tree, which means you can switch roles between missions.

Eurogamer Expo (Oct. 17–20)

One of the biggest game conventions in Europe (and the biggest one in the UK), the 2019 Eurogamer Expo is guaranteed to include some newsworthy announcements. Playable demos include Luigi's Mansion 3 and the new Mario & Sonic game, with more demos to be announced in the coming weeks.

'WWE 2K20' (Oct. 22)

Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks

This year's edition of 2K's WWE simulator hones in on the Women's Evolution, and features the rise and dominance of the Four Horsewomen of NXT: Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Bayley. Lynch and Roman Reigns are this year's cover stars. 

'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare' (Oct. 25)

The reboot of the Modern Warfare franchise introduces moral-based gameplay, where your mission success is predicated upon how much collateral damage you inflict upon the local population. It also features an expansive multiplayer mode, which will allow over 100 players to compete on the same map.

'The Outer Worlds' (Oct. 25)

A role-playing, first-person sci-fi adventure, The Outer Worlds deals with an alternate timeline of American history, where massive corporations are leading the colonization of space. It has branching story paths and an upgrade system for both your tactical and technical abilities. 

'Luigi's Mansion 3' (Oct. 31)

Perfectly timed to drop on Halloween, Luigi's Mansion 3 is sure to be another inspired, not-so-scary burst of creativity from the Big N. Luigi, the skinnier, more skittish half of the Mario brothers, will explore a hotel and overcome his fears to rescue Mario and Peach.
