According to a study, men are more likely to try drugs than women. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) surveyed about 70,000 individuals aged 12 or older in 2014 to get their results. The data comes courtesy of DrugAbuse.com. When asked whether they had ever taken an illicit drug, 54.1 percent of the men admitted they had compared to 44.5 percent of women.

But what are they taking? Broken down even further, 10.1 percent of men admitted to using tranquilizers (including depressants like sleeping pills) while 8.7 percent of women said they did. For marijuana, which is legal in states like California and New York if it’s for medical purposes, 49.5 percent of men said they partook compared to 39.2 percent for women. When it comes to the really hard stuff like cocaine, 1.7 times more men than women revealed they had used the drug at least once in their lifetime.

And not only are men more likely to try drugs, they’re doing them at much younger ages. See the graph below.
