George Zimmerman was arraigned this afternoon after being arrested on aggravated assault, domestic battery and criminal mischief charges for allegedly pointing a shotgun at his new girlfriend yesterday.
Though Zimmerman was granted $9,000 bail, he was ordered to stay away from Samantha Scheibe and her home. Under Judge Fred Schott's orders, Zimmerman, 30, is prohibited from having weapons in his possession and must wear a GPS monitor to track his whereabouts.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Zimmerman met with new attorney, Jeff Dowdy, this morning. Dowdy, the chief of the public defender's office in Sanford, Fla., described Zimmerman as "doing as well as can be expected." Mark O'Mara, who defended Zimmerman in his acquittal for the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, refused to represent Zimmerman again in September. Dowdy says that Zimmerman is indigent.
Zimmerman was arrested for reportedly shoving a shotgun at Scheibe, then locking her out of the home they shared after breaking a glass table. Scheibe, 27, told deputies in Seminole County that she had ordered Zimmerman to move out when he pointed the weapon at her and cocked it. Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Dennis Lemma told the Sentinel that Zimmerman then pushed Scheibe outside and locked the door.
Scheibe called 911, and while officers were outside attempting to coax Zimmerman to open the door, he placed his own 911 call, claiming that his girlfriend had "gone crazy" on him.
