10 Ridiculous Campaigns for White History Month

February is Black History Month, which comes around each year to uninformed cries of "racism." Every year, the monthly celebration of African-American heritage is accompanied by complaints and calls for "White History Month." Right on schedule, you'll find a group of people pondering why there's no White History Month, or even suggesting there be one to offer some sort of "balance." There's a reason blacks are referred to as "minorities," after all.

Victoria Jackson, a former Saturday Night Live cast member who's also a proud member of the Tea Party, recently crept back into semi-relevance by suggesting that there should be a "White History Month."

In an article posted on her personal website, Jackson bitched about Black History Month and then suggested that white men, specifically "White Christian Conservative Men," should be "loved and adored" for being the "backbone and originators of the greatest nation on earth." She blamed all of America's problems on what Alec Baldwin called a move from "white, middle-aged Christian dominance." That clearly threatens several people, including Jackson. She subsequently deleted the column, which doesn't suggest confidence in her own bullshit.

Jackson can keep praying for the Almighty White Male to save the U.S. from "God-hating communists like Alec Baldwin and Obama." She'll still only be (barely) remembered as the lame one on Celebrity Fit Club.

The Internet has allowed supreme ignorance to go viral. Take, for example, this Tumblr entitled When Is White History Month? It aggregates tweets where clueless twits ponder why there's no month dedicated to their heritage. In one tweet, someone dares to ask "Where's the equality?"

Where to begin? Then again, why even bother?

Last October, the student body of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, was furious at the appearance of a "White History Month" flier on campus. The flier, which was passed around residence halls, announced that both November and December would be "White History Month" because there's "too much white history to squeeze into one month."

The flier went on to complain about the lack of "white student groups" on Mercer's campus, noting that the presence of any group celebrating Caucasian heritage would be dismissed as racist. Clearly, a high school diploma and a few college courses don't make for intelligence.

Apparently, the need for "African American societies, black student organizations, and Indian heritage associations" is too advanced a concept for some to grasp. So much for higher learning.

On petitiononline.com, there's a call for White History Month. The group states: "We believe that if African Americans and now Hispanics can have their history month for their heritage why cant the White Americans have White history month????? Wake up Americans before we become extinct!!!!! Please, sign my petition so that we can also have our White history month.."

Whoever is responsible for this didn't even have the gumption to take it to the White House's official petition forum.

Whether this is a joke or not is irrelevant—it has 4,416 signatures. There's a scared fool born every day.

Last February, Arizona lawmaker Cecil Ash actually stood before state legislature and suggested that there be a holiday that celebrates white people. He did this with a straight face. He did this after state representative Richard Miranda proposed a Latino American Day. Ash said he supported the notion. He called it well deserved. And then he requested that "they do the same for us, when whites become the minority in the state."

You can't make this stuff up.

Arizona is the same state that refused to recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a holiday until 1990; it took the threat of a Super Bowl boycott to get folks to budge. It's also the home of the Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the man behind Tent City who found himself under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for racially profiling Latinos.

Do yourself a favor: If you have a Twitter account, search for #whitehistorymonth and see what returns. You'll see far too many tweets where people ask why, if there's a Black History Month, isn't White History Month a reality.

You'll see claims of racism, or worse, the dreaded "reverse racism," and maybe you'll even see some blatantly racist comments. Just remember: The hard-headed never prosper. Stupid is as stupid does, after all.

Last fall, in the wake of the "White History Month" flier that appeared on Mercer University's campus, writer Mychal Denzel Smith penned an eye-opening piece for the Guardian.

Smith argued that after years of scoffing at the notion, he agrees that America needs a White History Month. Not because the country needs a month to celebrate the Caucasian Christian male's contributions to society, but because America should devote time to teaching accurate American history, which is bigger than a racial love fest. Smith cites a 1986 speech by James Baldwin, where Baldwin explains that "White Americans" are ignorant of their own history based on years of being fed "myths" about it.

Both Baldwin and Smith are right—there should be time devoted to the accurate retelling of American history. But it should be year-round. That's the only thing that will "save White America from itself," as Smith suggests.

Founded in 2010, the Facebook group called White History Month boasts 7,558 likes. In its doomed mission statement, the group explains that it wasn't founded to support racism—the creators and members all agree that if one race gets a month to celebrate its heritage, than whites deserve the same right.

At the same time, they discourage fighting and negative comments, but how feasible is that in a group called "White History Month." Scroll through the comments and you'll see chants for "White Power" and worse. They knew what they were doing.

This Facebook group is a little more extreme; it's overrun with right wing politics. We're all entitled to our political beliefs, and it's possible to believe what you want without being racist. Not in this group, though.

In between all of the gun advocacy, there are anti-Obama jokes and casual droppings of the N-word. It's groups like this that drive the country backwards and make some supporters of the Second Amendment look and sound like lunatics.

If you're serious about something, creating banners for "Miss White America," the "United Caucasian College Fund" and "National Association for the Advancement of White People" suggests otherwise. You think it's funny, you think you're clever. You're wrong.

Compare to the other groups previously discussed, this Facebook group is extremely tame. It only has 70 likes, and attempts to soften the blow of its aim through the use of the word "Caucasian."

Founded last July, the group designated the month as the perfect time to celebrate Caucasian heritage in America. Everyday, they put up pictures of notable white men and women, ranging from Bill Nye to Shirley Temple. As one commenter mentioned, why not just call the group White American History month? What's the difference?
