Tragedy struck during a baptism on a California beach yesterday morning when a man was swept into the sea.
ABC Los Angeles reports that Benito Flores, 43, was participating in the ceremony in Guadalupe, Calif. around 10 a.m. That's when a huge wave reportedly pulled Flores and two other men into the water, though the others were able to escape.
Pastor Maurigro Cervantes of Jesus Christ Light of the Sky Church, Flores' cousin, told ABC Los Angeles that he tried to save Flores when he was struck by another wave. "I tried to take him out, but he was heavy, and then another big wave came and threw him," Cervantes explained.
A search to find Flores was called off at midnight. Coast Guard officials said there are no plans to continue it.
