FX announced on Monday that Mayans MC has been renewed for a second season. "Mayans MC is performing fantastically, proving to be a breakout first season," Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, said, perVariety. "The series premiered as the highest rated cable series this year and continues to sustain a committed fan base, reflecting the talent and drive of creators Kurt Sutter and Elgin James. We couldn’t be more excited to take this ride to a second season."
The decision to renew Mayans MC for a second season was an easy one in light of the series' consistently solid performances in the ratings. In addition to premiering as "the highest rated cable series this year" where it drew 5.1 million viewers, the show became the most-watched program in the Tuesday primetime slot through its first three episodes among men 18-34, and men 18-49. FX claims that Mayans MC is averaging 8.2 million viewers per episode across all platforms.
The Sons of Anarchy spinoff tells the story of Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes, a prospect in the Mayans Motorcycle Club charter. The series takes place in the fictional California border town of Santo Pedro, and picks up two and a half years from where Sons left off. "The Mayans MC mythology sprung from the womb of Sons of Anarchy, but anyone who has taken the time to watch, knows it has become its own mythical creature," co-creator Kurt Sutter said, perThe Hollywood Reporter.
After airing just four episodes, FX is eagerly looking forward to seeing where Mayans can go from here.
