Just as the world of film criticism has lost one of its most important voices with the passing of Roger Ebert, so has the Twitterverse. The Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic, who lost his long battle with cancer this week, was an early adopter of the technology, sending out his first tweet in October of 2009.
His final message, sent at 1:14 a.m. on April 3, just hours before his passing, was a link to a farewell letter of sorts, the presciently titled “A Leave of Presence."
Movies, of course, were a popular topic among the critic’s 31,260 tweets. But he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind on the subjects of politics, literature, current events, popular culture and his newfound love of online cat videos either.
