According to CNN, Joss Whedon, the patron saint of all things geek, was tantalizingly close to directing Disney’s Star Wars: Episode VII when it was first announced; unfortunately, the dude forgot that he has another somewhat-anticipated film on his schedule called Avengers 2 to do. Here is what he told the site when talking about both projects:
None
With J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and now Joss Whedon all publicly backing away from the project, it’s as if Disney can’t give this job away. Though he was never offered the keys to the franchise, we can't see Disney not giving Whedon the gig if the schedule worked out. Still, the prospect of Whedon doing Star Wars sounds too good to be true, and it would have put the minds of many fans at ease if he did jump on board. Oh well, at least he has a good excuse not to do it.
