Top Gun 2 has been talked about in Hollywood for years, but now the sequel is finally making concrete steps toward production. After bringing on Jerry Bruckheimer as producer, Paramount has found a writer. Justin Marks, who wrote the script for the upcoming live-action version of The Jungle Book, will also pen the return of Maverick, according to The Hollywood Reporter

Earlier this year Bruckheimer revealed Tom Cruise would return to the iconic role for a plot based on the premise that, despite the prevalence of drones, human pilots aren't obsolete. The film faced a major setback in 2012 when Tony Scott, the original director attached to direct the sequel, committed suicide. A previous draft for Top Gun 2 was written by Peter Craig, the man behind The Town

Just like when Bruckheimer announced plot details, the question of when Tom Cruise will have time to film still lingers. His plate is already stuffed with Mission Impossible 5, Van Helsing, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

Top Gun 2 won't be out for a while, but at least it's making tangible progress.
