#BlackOutDay has taken over Twitter and Tumblr today, celebrating a diverse range of black beauty and combating negative stereotypes. A Tumblr user named T'von started the social media event, and YouTube star Franchesca Ramsey helped to blowup the hashtag. More than 200,000 tweets about the movement have already been sent out today, according to Topsy.
She told ABC News:
"We're asking black people to share pictures, videos and GIFs of themselves to celebrate our people coming from all different walks of life. It's a celebration of black beauty and our individuality.
"Unfortunately, in most popular media talking about black people and our bodies, it's mostly of us breaking the law, being killed or mistreated. So it's nice to combat these negative images and stereotypes with positive representations of ourselves."
The creator also posted about the movement's success before he ran out of posts for the day.
"I only have 5 posts left til I hit my limit. I’m so proud of all the love and support I have received today. I’m so glad that this celebration of black excellence and beauty turned out the way it did as it shattered all my expectations. Keep posting and reblogging selfies because #blackout will continue on through the weekend!
I love all of yall and keep sending those selfies because I plan on hitting my limit again tomorrow.
Also all #Whiteout members… don’t think we forgot about yall dumb fucks. #FriedTurkeyDay will begin soon."
