5 Games to Fill the Gaping Void Left Behind by 'Flappy Bird'

Flappy Bird, like Icarus, flew too close to the heavens and its wax wings have melted, falling to a brief and abrupt death.

Flappy Bird was reportedly pulling down $50,000 a day on the app store while at the same time drawing the ire of the anonymous hordes of the Internet. Flappy Bird was vilified as a clone of a clone that had unceremoniously lifted art assets from more recognizable, classic NES titles.

After recieving hundreds of death threats, the game's creator, Dong Nguyen, pulled the game from the app store this past weekend. Going even further, Nguyen went on to say that the game had ruined his life. Flappy Bird is no more, but the game had become such a momentary pop-culture touchstone, that iPhones featuring the game have been put up for auction on Ebay for as much as $90,000.

Granted, those are (probably) trolls artificially inflating the price, but there still remains a market for the title.

The cartoony character designs betray a well-crafted tower defense title brimming with upgradeable units and garrisons.

Take Flappy Bird, drown it in the Pacific Ocean and you will end up with Flappy Fish.

The funny thing about this mobile app is that the original name was actually Happy Bee, and the creators just changed the name to bite Flappy Bird's steeze. The game has players controlling a bee in an attempt to collect honey. Tapping the screen keeps the bee in the air and heading towards the honey. No pipes, but still a tapping game if you're desperate for a Flappy Bird style experience.

Dojo of Death is an anomaly on several levels. Firstly it's a free browser game and there's not exactly a lot of depth when in comes to browser titles (except for Candy Box, that game rules) and secondly Dojo of Death is addictive.

Like, we've been pulled aside at work and reprimanded addictive. Survive wave after wave of ninja assassins and archers by pointing and clicking on the screen to send your katana through hundreds of digital ninjas. The game may not be mobile, but it's still light years beyond all of the Flappy Bird clones.
