Being a standup comedian can be an absolutely brutal line of work. Everybody starts at the very bottom and quite frankly isn’t especially good. Even the very best have had jokes fail in spectacular fashion, or gigs that essentially robbed them of their dignity.

In a web-exclusive Tonight Show interview, Jerry Seinfeld revealed that he is no exception.

His set at a 1977 New Year’s Eve party at a Queens Boulevard disco went about as well as you could expect; that is to say, not well at all. While it was a little rough for Jerry that nobody listened to his set, at least nobody threatened him with bodily harm. Somehow, it seems unlikely that people rocking out at a disco on New Year’s Eve in the 70s were concerned with anything but cocaine.
