When he’s not dropping goofy lightbulb commercials or taking Jurassic Park-themed wedding photos, Jeff Goldblum also casually breaks huge news about beloved movie franchises.
In an interview with Time, the actor confirmed that he is set to reprise his role as anxious earth-saving environmentalist David Levenson in the much-anticipated sequel to 1996’s blockbuster hit Independence Day. After blowing up the alien mother ship nearly 20 years ago thanks to a floppy disk-loaded computer virus and a nuclear bomb, Goldblum said that the main parties are all in place for a sequel:
“I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with [director] Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer, and they’ve been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon.”
While there are no dates confirmed for production or release of the film, things do seem to be progressing behind the scenes. Goldblum indicated that, at a minimum, the plot has been determined:
“‘Nebulous until actually’ is what that file is under, but yeah, they’re still talking about it and I’ve heard recent rumblings here and there about it, and ‘Oh, there’s a scripting coming in’ — maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it’s brewing.”
The question on everyone’s mind, however, has to be: is Randy Quaid going to be able to find time in his busy schedule to come back for the sequel? Sure, technically he died to save everyone at Area 51, but legendary pilot Russell Case is worthy of a resurrection. And it’s not as if the original movie was bound by the constraints of reality.
