Death by selfie is a big deal and Russia’s not taking it lightly. The country’s created a campaign called Safe Selfy warning innocent and daredevil selfie takers alike about dangerous selfies which reportedly resulted in 100 injuries and many deaths this year, including a 21-year-old Moscow woman who shot herself in the head while holding a pistol for a selfie resulting in an injury, or two young men who died after taking a selfie with a live grenade after pulling the pin out.
On behalf of Russian police, responsible for the campaign, Assistant Minister of Internal Affairs Lieutenant Colonel of Police Elena Alekseeva talked about the initiative today saying,
Pamphlets for the campaign read “A cool selfie could cost you your life.” The campaign’s obviousness borders on parody with featured tips like “a selfie with a weapon kills” or with an image of a person taking a selfie with what appears to be a wild animal, but it’s clear these tips are sadly needed no matter how obvious. We could all keep these safety tips in mind the next time we do it for the 'gram.
