At an event in New York today, Barnes & Noble took the wraps off the newest addition to its bestselling NOOK e-reader line. The all-new NOOK will sport a host of new features including a full touchscreen, better battery life, and an updated E-Ink display.
Dubbed "The Simple Touch Reader", the new NOOK has been completely revamped, with a slimmer, shorter, and lighter form factor. It tips the scales at a scant 7.48 ounces (the Amazon Kindle weighs in at 8.5), stands an inch shorter than the Kindle, and measures in at .47-inches thin, slighter thicker than the Kindle which is .335-inches thin. Like the Kindle, it rocks with a six-inch Pearl E-Ink screen, and comes with a built-in wi-fi connection.
Its newly shaped body has only one button, with all other operations handled by the full touchscreen. An on-screen keyboard will allow users to type in searches in the B&N bookstore, and page turning is handled with a swipe of a finger. Despite its smaller size, Barnes & Noble managed to squeeze in a battery capable of delivering two months of battery life. That's double what the current Kindle offers.
The all-new NOOK will not replace the NOOK Color, is scheduled to start shipping on June 10, and is available for pre-order at nook.com for $139. Check below for the full press release.
