The good news is a number of developers burned the midnight whiskey to make their apps available for Apple's new handset on or close to launch. So while the rest of the pack catches up, you should download these 13 apps that are tailored made for the iPhone 5.
Gmail
When Apple introduced the iPhone 5’s new four-inch display, it touted the fact that you could now read more lines of email. The same goes with Google’s GMail app. Not much has changed except for the added space. But if you use Gmail all-day everyday, you’ll be happy. Now, Google, get on with the YouTube app.
Foodspotting
The app you use when you’re looking for a particular dish, not a particular restaurant, came through with an iOS 6 and iPhone 5 ready app that brings along higher-res images and more release estate, making it easier for you to browse maps, comments, and reviews.
Kindle
With the Kindle iPhone 5 app you get more of the same, which, if you’re an avid iPhone reader is a good thing. Pages get more room to breathe, mean less page-flipping for you. All-in-all a good thing.

Are you surprised? Of course Facebook was ready with an app to take advantage of the iPhone 5. The scrolling is faster, the images are larger, and you get to see more of your feed in one glance. Depending on your circle of friends that could be good or bad.

One of the best RSS readers gets the more space to allow you to make your very own personalized news magazine right on your phone. The home page is more striking thanks to large images, and the actual articles are blown out thanks to the extra space up top that turns longer stories into aesthetically shorter pieces. It’s almost as if Twitter was anticipating the iPhone 5’s taller screen when it switched its mobile profile setup to include that newfangled Facebook-like image/info box. The updated app works great with the iPhone. Not only do you get to see more Tweets, when you click a profile, the new background-image setup works much better.

As we said in our 25 Best of Apps of 2012 (So Far) List, the Clear app is one of our favorite productivity apps available for iOS. It’s beautifully designed, easy-to-use thanks to its color-coded system, and now with the iPhone 5’s taller screen, it’s more useful. It can now display more of your to-do list in one go. The app usually costs $1, but if you download it now for a limited time for free. Go get it.

All you Pinners out there all ready know this, but Pinterest had its iPhone 5-ready app prepared before the phone even launched. The extra vertical space allows users to see larger boards, more likes, and more pins. It’s now as good as the Android app.

Netflix
When Apple introduced the iPhone 5’s four-inch display, it was most excited about the true movie watching experience users would now have. So it makes sense that Netflix came through with an app that allows users to do just that. Watch movies or TV shows in native 16:9 aspect ratio without the letterboxes. True full-screen viewing. If you haven’t ditched Netflix yet, get excited.

The CNN app was one of the very first optimized for the iPhone 5’s taller display. The app doesn’t have sport any aesthetic changes—not that it needed any, really—but you do get more info crammed onto one screen and images are larger, which is good for when you want to get a quick hit of news.

Marvel Comics
If I’m honest, I feel reading comics on a smartphone—save for ones like the Samsung Galaxy S3—is a silly endeavor. Comics are meant to shine in full-screen glory. The Marvel app on the iPad? Great. The iPhone 5, with its taller screen, helps that along. Though it’s still not ideal, the extra space does make for a better reading experience.

Really, you should already have Yelp on your iPhone. Not because it’s one of the best resources on the Net to find places to eat, drink, shop, stay, and do whatever else your weekly pittance allows. But because it’s now the service Apple is using to provide business information in its Maps app. Not much has changed, but the larger screen allows you to take in more info at once.

Attention all you parched lurkers: Instagram’s app has been optimized for iOS 6 and the iPhone 5. So you now get to peep full images on your phone without having to scroll around. You also get to see the Likes and come comments. The upgrade also brings along one helpful feature: Account recovery. If you forget your Instagram login info, you can use Facebook to reset your Instagram password.
