It's the first month into the New Year, and SNL is already full steam ahead. On Saturday, Sam Rockwell is hosting, alongside musical guest Halsey. The show promo teased Halsey for her inability to win a Golden Globe, and her expectation that football fans won't watch tonight's episode after the NFL game.
Rockwell opened his monologue by explaining how he's gone from being a character actor to a leading man. He proves just how much star power he has with a song-and-dance routine, where he fights off ninjas, jumps into brief romantic scenes with Leslie Jones and Cecily Strong, and ends dramatically with Kate McKinnon. The finale of Rockwell's monologue is really incredible, too.
This has been a month of firsts for Rockwell: at the 2018 Golden Globes, he won his first award for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri—and tonight, he'll make his debut as the host of SNL. Rockwell stars in the Martin McDonagh-directed black comedy crime film, Three Billboards, which focuses on Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) whose daughter is murdered. Months pass and the local police fail to find the culprit, so Hayes takes the situation into her own hands. On the outskirts of Ebbing, she paints three billboards with contentious messages, challenging the town's lauded chief of police, William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). When his second-in-command, Officer Dixon (Rockwell) is drawn into the case, the feud heightens.
“It’s nice to be in a movie that people see, you know?” Rockwell quipped during his Golden Globes acceptance speech. “This movie is about compassion,” he continued. “And I think we need some of that these days.”
