Legendary Pictures made some big announcements at Comic Con: a Godzilla sequel and a King Kong prequel (see what we did there).
The production company behind this year's wildy-successful Godzilla reboot announced that Gareth Edwards would return to direct Godzilla 2 when he's done working on his Star Wars spinoff that comes out in 2016. A video clip also revealed that classic Godzilla monsters Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah will be in the sequel.
While the Godzilla 2 announcement was totally expected, Legendary saved the big surprise for the end of the panel, when they revealed a teaser for the King Kong prequel Skull Island, and a release date of Nov. 4, 2016.
The film will take place on the island where King Kong is said to have originated. Deadline reports that the teaser showed a stormy island before a shot of King Kong beating his chest.
Here's the quote from Legendary's press release:
"Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions."
We can only hope this means a King Kong versus Godzilla throwdown is coming sometime in the future (praying hands).
