Bonnie Tyler, the Grammy-nominated voice behind “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has been placed in a medically induced coma after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal earlier this week. The update was confirmed on Thursday, May 7, by her manager, Matt Davis, following initial reports that the 74-year-old singer had been hospitalized after a sudden medical emergency.
According to People, Tyler underwent emergency surgery in Faro, Portugal, on May 6. Early updates said the procedure had gone well and that she was recovering, but Davis later revealed doctors decided to place the singer into an induced coma “to aid her recovery.” He also asked for privacy on behalf of Tyler and her family while she remains under medical care.
The news immediately sparked concern across social media, especially among longtime fans who associate Tyler with some of the most recognizable rock ballads of the last four decades. Though she first broke through in the late ’70s with songs like “It’s a Heartache” and “Lost in France,” Tyler became a global icon in 1983 when “Total Eclipse of the Heart” turned into a massive crossover hit and one of the defining power ballads of the MTV era.
The song, written and produced by frequent Meat Loaf collaborator Jim Steinman, helped launch her album Faster Than the Speed of Night to major international success.
Davis said another statement would be released “when we are able to,” but no additional medical details have been made public.
Prior to her hospitalization, Tyler had a busy touring schedule lined up for the rest of 2026, including more than two dozen shows across Europe beginning later this month. She had performances scheduled in Malta and Germany before the end of May.
Tyler has remained remarkably active in recent years despite a career that now spans nearly five decades. Her 2021 album The Best Is Yet to Come marked her 18th studio release, and she continued touring internationally while revisiting classics like “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
In 2025, she also scored renewed chart success in Europe with “Together,” a collaboration with David Guetta and Hypaton that reworked elements of her signature hit.
