In recent years many fans have noticed a change in Zac Efron’s appearance, and now the actor has addressed speculation that he’s had plastic surgery.

In a new profile feature with Men’s Health, Efron was asked about how his jawline changed, which he explained that it stems from when he shattered his jaw in 2013. He said that his masseter muscles should work “like a symphony” with other muscles in his face, but on account of his jaw injury that’s no longer the case. In the years since, he’s worked with a physical therapist to mediate the issues with his facial muscles, but then he took some time off from therapy in 2021 while he was filming in Australia.

“The masseters just grew,” he said of his appearance in a video promoting an Earth Day special with Bill Nye, which shocked some fans. “They just got really, really big.” Efron didn’t realize that his look sparked so much speculation until his mother called him to ask if he had plastic surgery done. He was able to avoid most of the discussion, because he tends to avoid social media. “If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do,” he said. “I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Efron discussed his built physique in 2017’s Baywatch, which he said is not “attainable.” He even said that he looked “fake,” or “CGI’d” in the movie. “That required Lasix, powerful diuretics, to achieve. So I don't need to do that. I much prefer to have an extra, you know, 2 to 3 percent body fat," he said, adding that the training for the film had a negative impact on him. "I started to develop insomnia and I fell into a pretty bad depression for a long time. Something about that experience burned me out."
