Amid the wave of early reactions to the saga-closing Star Warsentry The Rise of Skywalker, a highlight of the global conversation has been the making of franchise history with a scene showing two women from the Resistance sharing a celebratory kiss.
Though the characters are minor and "not heavily featured," perThe Hollywood Reporter, the moment is notable for being the first of its kind in the franchise. The confirmation of the scene comes after comments from director J.J. Abrams earlier this month in which he teased the scene in question, confirming at the time that doing so did not give anything away about its closely guarded story.
"And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they're being represented in the film," Abrams told Varietyat the time.
The Rise of Skywalker moment, however, has been criticized by some due to it being hyped up ahead of the movie's release and ultimately only amounting to a brief amount of screen time:
Back in October, the producers behind Disney's Star Wars Resistance animated series confirmed via a podcast discussion that characters Orka and Flix are "absolutely a gay couple, and we're proud of that."
Rise of Skywalker hits theaters this Friday.
