The rom-com division of cinema has been enjoying somewhat of a revival in recent years, marking a return to favor that surely owes something to the critical and commercial success of the excellent The Big Sick. For the latest possible entry in the new canon, we turn to Netflix's Someone Great.
Starring Gina Rodriguez and Lakeith Stanfield, the movie centers on music writer Jenny (Rodriguez) as she bags a new job in San Francisco and is met with a breakup when telling her longtime boyfriend (Stanfield) the news.
As writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson explained when sharing the trailer, we shouldn't expect to revisit the genre's antiquated tropes. "I always wanted to see a romantic comedy where a woman chooses herself," she said. "So I made one." Looking back on how seeing Bridesmaids in theaters ultimately proved hugely inspirational for her, Robinson pointed to the fact that the director of the 2011 comedy—Paul Feig—has also thrown his weight behind Someone Great.
