AMC announced on Monday that Season 10 of The Walking Dead will be premiering in October.

The announcement comes less than a week before Season 9 picks back up from where the series left off in its midseason finale in late November. The show's cliffhanger revealed the existence of The Whisperers, a group that is capable of walking amongst the herd because of masks that are fashioned from the faces of zombies.

Earlier in the season, we saw the departure of Rick Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, from the series. What was believed to be his death was only meant to build up excitement towards the revelation that he would be featured in the expanded TWD universe. Lincoln will reprise his iconic role in multiple feature-length projects from AMC Studios Original Films, written by Walking Dead chief content officer Scott Gimple.

"These films are going to be big evolutions of what we’ve been doing on the show, with the scope and scale of features," Gimple previously toldVariety. "We're starting with the first part of the continuing story of Rick Grimes, and there is much more on the way, featuring yet-unseen worlds of ‘The Walking Dead’ and faces from the show’s past, as well as new characters we hope to become favorites, told by TWD veterans and emerging voices. We want to break new ground with different, distinct stories, all part of the same world that’s captured our imagination for nearly a decade of the Dead."
