With television's reboot trend still in full effect, The Office fans have been steadfast in their prayers for a relaunch of the iconic sitcom. But Steve Carell has been doing well as a serious actor: He was on SNL to promote the drama Beautiful Boy. This doesn't mean people couldn't try to convince him to return as Michael Scott, though.
Carell used his opening monologue to say that, no, he's not interested in an Office reboot. Kenan Thompson showed up in the audience to persuade him, and Carell responded by saying it'd be like asking him to do a reboot of Kenan & Kel (which Kenan would be "honored" to do, by the way).
Then, Carell's former Office co-stars, Ellie Kemper, Ed Helms, and Jenna Fischer, popped up to insist Carell should take the money for the reboot so he doesn't have to make those "sad movies" anymore. Neither this nor the coaxing of Carell's own wife and kids, who assured him that they do not need him around the house, could sway the Beautiful Boy star's stance.
This isn't the only time Carell has had to explain why he's just not that into an Office reboot. He told Esquire in October that new Michael Scott adventures would not work in 2018.
"Because The Office is on Netflix and replaying, a lot more people have seen it recently," Carell said. "And I think because of that there's been a resurgence in interest in the show, and talk about bringing it back. But apart from the fact that I just don't think that's a good idea, it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted 10 years ago. The climate's different."
