HBO has been incredibly tight-lipped about the upcoming final season of Game of Thrones. They've gone so far as to utilize drone-killing devices around shooting locations to keep any scrap of information about the series from leaking out to the public. Given that, it's actually kind of amazing that Thrones director David Nutter was allowed to talk about the forthcoming episodes at all. But Nutter gave out what scraps he could during a recent Reddit AMA with Thrones' eager fans.
Nutter said that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss came up with an ending that long-term fans will enjoy.
“I think that David and Dan did a tremendous job, and they took into consideration what the fans want, as well as what is right as far as storytelling is concerned. I guarantee there's going to be lots of surprises and shocking moments, but it’s really very compelling stuff,” he said.
Beyond that, it was tough for Nutter to get into specifics. He said that his opening episode of Thrones will "make a splash." (And when the director of the Red Wedding episode of GoT says he's going to make an impression, it's probably best to believe him.)
"You have to reset the table, put everyone back in their place, you have to take them to their next position. But you have to entertain, that’s what’s most important,” he said.
Nutter joked (?) that sharing too much could lead to him being killed. He said that the security was tight even compared to previous seasons.
“It was limited viewing on many things. Not a lot of paper on the set, like none. No scripts were printed, we only used iPads and things of that nature," he said. "It was much more serious than in the past.”
In spite of all that, Nutter seemed to imply that time travel and direwolves will be involved in Season 8.
“Well, I’ll be the first to tell you that I have no time travel in my episodes," he said, slyly dodging a question about Bran Stark's time-meddling abilities. "That’s the only clue I’m going to give you.”
