Samira Wiley of Orange Is the New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale joined The Blacklist's Ryan Eggold to announce the 2018 Emmy nominees at a livestream in Hollywood on Thursday morning. Game of Thrones leads the list, with its penultimate season garnering 22 nominations, followed by Westworld and Saturday Night Live with 21 apiece, then The Handmaid's Tale with 20. Atlanta got 16, Stranger Things took 12.
Netflix was the most-recognized network with 112 nominations, HBO following with 108, then NBC with 78. Hulu got 27, Amazon scored 22.
For the past several years, TV has arguably been performing at a much higher level than cinema, especially as streaming services continue to give creatives more room to experiment. 2018 has been a great year for television, and it’s only July. For many certified must-watch shows, the most recent seasons have only further cemented that status: Atlanta (best show on television, go ahead and @ me), The Good Place, High Maintenance, and The Americans all had knock-out seasons. On the other hand, there are some newcomers that have totally spoiled us, with Killing Eve, The Chi, and Barry chief among them.
The Emmys—which this year will be in their 70th installment—will happen in Los Angeles on Sept. 17. They'll be hosted Michael Che and Colin Jost, Saturday Night Live's head writers and "Weekend Update" anchors. Check out the nominations for the major categories below; see each and every one at the Emmys' site.
