Zooey Deschanel revealed to Conan O'Brien that Prince would only appear on New Girl if the Kardashians didn't. In a new interview on Conan, Deschanel revealed how the incredible cameo came to be. "I got an email from [Prince's] manager saying that he liked watching the show and wanted to come on," she told Conan. "It was surprising because I wouldn't have pegged him as a New Girl fan... It was a huge compliment, I was floored."
Of course, Prince had certain demands before committing to the cameo, including specifications on who else would be guesting on the episode. "It turns out that someone from Prince's camp said 'Who are the celebrities? I hope it's not a Kardashian,'" Deschanel admitted. As luck had it, two of the Kardashians had already filmed a cameo for the episode. "It's really sad because Khloé Kardashian and Kris Jenner had very kindly come in and shot [a] scene... I felt so bad because obviously everyone had gone out of their way to be there on that day, but Prince was running the show."
The show made the necessary changes to seal the Prince cameo, including gathering all of the scripts and call sheets from the cast. Deschanel went outside to see what was going on and saw all evidence of the Kardashian's cameo was being burned in an on-set bonfire before Prince arrived.
Deschanel didn't specify the reason that Prince's camp made the request, but it could have something to do with that time Prince infamously kicked Kim Kardashian off stage when she wouldn't dance. Interestingly enough, Kardashian remembered the memory fondly on her Instagram after Prince's sudden passing in April, but the internet remembered it a little differently.
