During a Bernie Sanders campaign event at Morehouse College on Tuesday, Killer Mike delivered a speech and has since faced backlash for a quote he says was taken out of context.
The 40-year-old rapper and activist called out the Vermont senator's rival—Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton—without naming her.
"But I talked to Jane Elliott a few weeks ago, and Jane said, 'Michael, a uterus doesn’t qualify you to be president of the United States. You have to be—you have to have policy that’s reflective of social justice,'" Killer Mike said. "Paying women a fair wage is social justice. Making sure that minorities is social justice. Ending a bullsh*t drug war is social justice. Making sure our children can go to college is social justice."
A clip of the rapper saying "a uterus doesn't qualify you to be president" circulated and immediately received backlash.
Brad Woodhouse, president of pro-Clinton super PAC Correct the Record, tweeted that Killer Mike's words were "sexist bullsh*t."
Like their hasn't been enough sexist bullshit on this campaign - now this from @BernieSanders camp. https://t.co/3Uq36QQAat
The rapper took to Twitter to clarify that he was quoting a mentor who told him why she wouldn't be voting for Clinton.
Some audience members and fans came to his defense:
