The reboot epidemic recently overtook one of the creepiest PG-rated movies of all time — Gremlins — but apparently not without shedding the creative fat of the original. Earlier this week, original Gremlins writer Chris Columbus revealed that he would not be penning the script for the remake due to a desire for a "new direction," but would be serving as a producer alongside Steven Spielberg. Columbus also attempted to convert the often cynical internet by calling the original Gremlins "very dear to my heart," ensuring that the new incarnation will be almost nothing like the Joe Dante-helmed 1984 creeper.

Speaking of Dante, he didn't waste very much time confirming his total disinterest in the reboot, opening a small but effective can of indictment at the Riviera Maya Film Festival on Saturday. When asked about his participation in the new Gremlins, Dante gave a firm "No." Furthermore, Dante added that it's "owned by other people," a technicality which likely has no connection to his decision to leave 1984 alone.

Dante also gave a notable jab at the reboot epidemic at large, specifically pointing out the 2014 remake of RoboCop. "They remake pictures that people just didn't want to see remade," Dante told the Riviera audience. "Did anybody really want to see another RoboCop?" Well, no — but we all want to see another Good Burger and will bravely endure all the inconsequential reboots it takes to bring that to fruition.
