Each year the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) conducts a study analyzing the demographics of ticket buyers for the highest grossing blockbusters. In 2014, Michael Bay's explosion holocaust Transformers: Age of Extinction ranked as the film with the most ethnically diverse audience in contrast to its tentpole competition like The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy

White males constituted the vast majority of ticket-buyers last year, but a couple films were able to connect with less monolithic groups. According to Variety :

Caucasians dominated the makeup of ticket buyers to these films, but the crowds that showed up to multiplexes have grown more multicultural. “Transformers” attracted the most ethnically diverse audience among the top films. The giant robots sequel had an audience that was 22% African-American, 26% Hispanic and 14% Asian.

In contrast, “The Lego Movie” had the highest percentage of Caucasian ticket buyers at 64% and was the least diverse, bringing in an audience that was 12% African-American, 16% Hispanic and 8% Asian.

Only one picture, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” had a predominantly female group of ticket buyers with 57% of the crowd consisting of women.

Even though American Sniper is technically the highest grossing film of 2014 (released Christmas Day), the bulk of its box office receipts registered in 2015 so it wasn't part of this study. But something tells me I know which group of people foamed at the mouth to go see that in record-breaking numbers.
