Officials in Washington report that shots have been fired at a high school just outside of Seattle.

According to CNN, a spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol said that authorities were investigating a shooting at Pilchuck High School in Marysville, Wash. KOMO News reports that police have descended upon the school in response to the incident, while KIRO 7 adds that the Marysville School District confirmed that the school has been placed under lockdown.

This is a developing story and will be updated here as details emerge.

Police in Marysville say that the gunman was a student who is now dead. Three students who sustained gunshot wounds to the head have been hospitalized in critical condition, while a fourth victim suffered less severe injuries.

Per CNN, a second fatality aside from the gunman has been reported. CNN reports that the gunman walked into the school cafeteria, approached a group of friends described as his friends and opened fire before turning the gun on himself:

A student at Washington state's Marysville-Pilchuck High School walked into the school's cafeteria, went up to a table with students, came up from behind ... and fired about six bullets into the backs of them, witness Jordan Luton told CNN. They were his friends, so it wasn't just random, Luton said.

UPDATE: The shooter has been identified as 15-year-old Jaylen Fryberg. Fryberg, who police say used a .40-caliber handgun, reportedly open fire on fellow students due to distress over a female student.
