The upcoming fifth season of Game of Thrones has already made a lot of headlines despite the fact that filming isn’t even done, and now we’ve got another big story from one of TV’s biggest shows.

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss confirmed at a Spain media session that the new season will include flashback scenes:

“Making the first season, we set a rule: No prophecies, dreams, or flashbacks. We already failed the first two, and this season we broke the third. So yes, this season will finally have flashbacks.”

This news had long been rumored after last May, when a random lady tweeted this:

You can interpret this news a lot of ways, although it’s hard to really say without knowing just how much flashing back they’re going to do. It could just be a scene or two with young Cersei, in which case this is a lot ado about nothing. But if it’s more, you kind of have to wonder if they’re just finding ways to buy George R.R. Martin more time to finish the books.

Whatever the case, a few flashbacks should be fine. But if the show starts getting into Lost-style flash forwards and flash sideways, then there’s a serious problem.
