The Pirate Bay

Shut down: Nov. 17, 2009

Everyone’s favorite torrent site allowed users to share a variety of electronic files: including music, games, software, and other multimedia. The former host of over 3.5 million torrents and 5 million registered users had its servers raided by 50 Sweedish police officers in 2006, and its site being shut down three years later. The Pirate Bay’s four confidants (Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm and Carl Lundström) were given one year in prison and $3.6 million in fines. Worst part of it all: the same judge who sentenced the foursome was the same man responsible for ordering the raid three years earlier. Grimey. However, the site returned and everything seems to be business as usual.
