Why we’re excited: Come December, theaters are going to be packed with Oscar-baiting dramas, which makes The Sitter’s 12/9 release date feel like a strategically positive move. Around that time, box office frequenters are going to need a respite from all of the seriousness that’ll be afoot, so director David Gordon Green’s After Hours-inspired comedy should provide such an alternative. But there are two points sparked by The Sitter that will make this babysitting romp, about an under-qualified slacker (Jonah Hill) who takes a group of kids on a drug run, all the more intriguing.

Firstly, Green is coming off of Your Highness, the raunchy fantasy comedy that both tanked in theaters and underwhelmed creatively; with The Sitter, can the certifiably talented director bounce back to his Pineapple Express level? And then there’s Hill, who, in December, will have the much less silly Moneyball in the public eye, a stark departure from his past comedies—will audiences want more gravity and fewer fart jokes?

We’re ready for both. The Sitter’s trailer has a couple of genuinely amusing moments, particularly Hill’s jive talk session near the end. The impressive supporting cast—the always great Sam Rockwell, Curb Your Enthusiasm standout J.B. Smoove, and Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist hottie Ari Graynor—doesn’t hurt, either.
