In 2002, Bill Willingham unleashed Fables onto the world of comics, and since then it has been one of the most consistently entertaining and mind-blowing books on shelves. Set in a world where all of the characters from timeless fairytales secretly live amongst us, Fables blends classic literature with humor and action to create a vastly interesting amalgamation of modern storytelling tropes.

Fables include a number of strange characters, so it would need a ton of CGI to create the bizarre world. But movies like Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth  (both written and directed by Guilermo del Toro) have taught us that even the most over-the-top elements can work under the right direction. The basic story of the residents of Fabletown hiding from humanity and learning to govern themselves is so grounded in reality that special effects and whimsical makeup would act as window-dressing for an otherwise relatable tale.

For Warner Bros., Fables could be a potential successor to the Harry Potter throne, and, if treated with respect, it could wind up becoming a modern fantasy epic/sprawling multi-part saga.
