Smokepurpp's Deadstar release has plenty of standout moments, but its the Travis Scott collab "Fingers Blue" that turned heads across the industry. It's a strong song, but it's also definitive proof that Purpp has graduated from SoundCloud stardom to mainstream success—without sacrificing the production style or raw delivery that defines his sound.

"I chose producing because I didn't know how to play any instruments," Purpp told us. "I started off producing my own beats, but... I just worked with Mike Dean. It's crazy, because I didn't think I was going to do any of this shit."

Deadstar is also Smokepurpp's first release on his new home, Todd Moscowitz's Alamo Records. The speed at which all this happened is truly impressive, and when we spoke with the rapper during a recent stop in New York, he was still adjusting to his new exposure. One thing that hasn't changed, however, is Purpp's no-holds-barred approach to production, especially when it comes to longtime collaborator Lil Pump. "That's who I started making music with," he told us. "It's faster, it just feels cooler."
