Pigeons & Planes' Best New Artists of the Month

Essential rising talents who caught our eye in July.

Finding new artists is easier than ever, but this creates a problem: it's harder than ever to filter through it all and keep tabs on what's really good. With so many artists popping up every day, it's impossible not to miss out on some fresh faces and new sounds.

With that in mind, we'll be highlighting our favorite new acts each month. Here are the best new artists of July.

Trippie Redd

Trippie Redd

There's no question that Trippie Redd is an artist you need to know. He's been putting numbers on the board and making a big impression on music fans across the nation. His lead single "Love Scars," off of his debut EP A Love Letter to You, taps into that new crossroad of genre-spanning innovation.

The Ohio native takes an untraditional approach as his sound combines a raw energy, songwriting skills, and futuristic music production that makes him stand out in a crowded field. Take a look at his video for "Love Scars" below and keep an ear out for rap's next star

Jelani Aryeh

jelani aryeh

"My name is Jelani Aryeh. I’m 17. I’m African-American, Filipino, and Chinese. I grew up in the suburbs and that plays a big part in my music."

He may be young and still figuring things out, but Jelani Aryeh is already making impressive music, mixing pop, R&B, and rap on his debut EP Suburban Destinesia. Influenced by artists like Frank Ocean and Kevin Abstract, Jelani jumps between genres with ease, and he maintains an outlook that is relatable to so many young creative people feeling trapped by their surroundings.

"Where We Go" is a highlight, but listen to Jelani Aryeh's entire EP and read more about him here.

Trinidad Cardona

Trinidad Cardona

At just 18, Arizona-based Trinidad Cardona is already turning heads with his massive online hit "Jennifer." Cardona is drawing from jazz, '90s R&B, and dancehall to create a transformative sound, which is all the more impressive considering he came to music out of restlessness.

"It started out of boredom honestly," he told us. "So, when I started doing music I ended up falling in love with it and then I realized my records aren’t bad and people are actually playing my records. I go into the city and I hear my records sometimes. Then I started falling in love with the creative process, so immediately I already knew I was going to fall in love with it and I was going to master it."

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish has been making waves in the industry for a minute, an impressive accomplishment considering she's 15 years old. Her debut track "Ocean Eyes" has over 15 million plays on Spotify, and her fan base is growing with every exciting, edgy video.

Eilish's latest single "COPYCAT," off her debut EP dont smile at me, is a perfect glimpse at her raw talent. Sultry, ethereal vocals pair masterfully with unique electronic-pop beats to create a unique listening experience. Billie is just in the beginning of her career, and the only way from here is up.

Rozwell Fitzroy

Rozwell Fitzroy

Rozwell Fitzroy is just 21, but the Virginia Beach musician/designer already has this music thing figured out. "Block Game" is an incredible cut—the bouncy, charismatic track oozes cool, the kind of song that sounds like it came to the artist fully formed.

But Rozwell is a meticulous student of music, one who plays the cello, drums, and handles production. "I made 'Block Game' after a three-day stretch where I felt like I couldn't make anything," he told us. "I set out to make the most outlandish song I made up to that point. It just happened in like 30 minutes while the sun was setting. I remember the moment I made it I knew other people would like this song a lot and that it would do something for them."

Knox Fortune

knox fortune

Knox Fortune has been biding his time. A longtime member of Chicago's famed SAVEMONEY collective, his production credits and guest features have become increasingly star-studded in recent years. After producing Joey Purp and Chance the Rapper's hit "Girls @" and singing on Chance's Coloring Book cut "All Night" last year, Knox started getting serious about a solo career. The incredible "Help Myself" arrived in April, and he's followed it up with the equally impressive "Torture" and "Lil Thing."

And while SaveMoney is still in the picture—Joey Purp co-wrote "Lil Thing," and Nico Segal's distinctive trumpet is a regular guest—Knox Fortune is forging his own lane. Layers of distortion and effects lay a thick haze over Knox's bubbly, effusive songwriting. It's not quite rock, not quite R&B, but wholly original.

Jachary

jachary

Jachary is a Boston boy who now lives in New York, a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer whose offbeat personality and sense of fun shines through in the music that we've heard from him so far. His debut EP, There's A Virus Going On, is out September 12, and new single "Yellow Vision" is a buoyant taste of what's to come. Jachary's smooth vocals tap dance over the kaleidoscopic production, and that hook is pure gold.

Jachary is making music that draws influence from all over the place, but he makes it work seamlessly, and with more solo music and production work for Deem Spencer on the way, he's in a great spot going in to the second half of 2017.

Nate Dae

nate dae

Nate Dae moved from Florida to California last year not knowing what the future held. As the California PSA project shows, he spent his time wisely. The dreamy, multi-faceted project shows an artist coming into his own, experimenting with new sounds and genres for the first time. The funk infusions work especially well on "I Feel Ya" and "Mood Swings," but the whole project is worth a listen. Dae is soaking up the sounds of California and employing them in new, exciting ways.

Wulfy

wulfy press photo

Born in Colombia, Wulfy immigrated to America with his family as a child, surviving a two month journey through Central America by way of foot, boat, and bus. As a teenager in Florida, he picked up the guitar and started dabbling in music, but it wasn't until a chance run-in with producer Josh December while he was working at Walgreens two and a half years ago that he started taking music seriously.

His sound mixes pop melodies with bass-heavy rap production, and we're addicted. Learn more about Wulfy here.

Natalie Green

Natalie Green

With his first release as Natalie Green, Albert Gordon has landed on his feet. Making his debut solo EP in the back of his car while homeless, there's been a bit of a stumble, but he's proved he's capable of turning dire circumstances into gorgeous music. Filled with stunning melodies, inventive vocal effects, and touching lyrics, Natalie Green Is My Lover is a reserved debut that promises a brighter future removed from the back of his car.

Jae Stephens

jae stephens

Emerging L.A.-based artist Jae Stephens only has two songs out, but she's already honed a distinct sound—a mix of classic R&B influences and polished modern production. This is certainly no accident, and Jae has looked across the Atlantic for inspiration, working with Jam City on debut single "24k" and connecting with recent P&P favorite Bruno Major for new song "Every Time."

"'Every Time' was written during my first trip to London, with Bruno Major whose soulful sound totally complimented the modern take I wanted to put on a classic story set in the L.A heat," Jae explained via email. "This song was inspired by the way the city itself has such a way of making even the simplest things seem enticing and exciting, be it a relationship or anything; this was something that was made clear to me by spending time in a more understated environment far away."

If she keeps working with the right people and exploring new sounds with British producers, Jae Stephens could build up a truly impressive catalog.
