Damon Albarn has been keeping himself locked away working on the next Gorillaz album, offering us an update every few months or so on how it’s coming along. We knew it was coming along very well when we last got a progress update on the album last year, but now we’ve gotten news regarding the forthcoming release that we all feared. While the album was initially planned for release later this year, Jamie Hewlett, aka the other half of Gorillaz besides Albarn, has confirmed that the release has been pushed back a little bit.

Providing an update via Gorillaz fan page GorillazNorthAmerica, Jamie promises that the new Gorillaz album is “really fuckin’ special.” Saying that the album “can’t be rushed,” the fan page confirmed that the album will be releasing in 2017 rather than later this year. It’s now been over five years since the last Gorillaz album, with the fictional group’s fourth studio album The Fall releasing in April of 2011. Receiving mixed reviews after the grandiose Plastic Beach, which released a year earlier in 2010, many were let down by the album upon release.

Here’s hoping that the extra time they’re putting into their fifth studio album really pays off.
