In an interview on the Play.it podcast “Drink Champs” with hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, DMX tells the story of first meeting Puff Daddy and getting rejected. “Your voice is too rough, it’s not marketable,” Puff told X. Instead of being salty about it, DMX says he respects Puff for being honest and straightforward about it.
According to DMX, Puff changed his mind later on, but by then, X was over it. He took a deal with Def Jam instead, even though Puff offered more money to make the deal happen. “If you didn’t see the beast I was then… Nah, I’m cool.”
