A New Gorillaz Album is Currently in the Works

Earlier this year, Damon Albarn confirmed that a new Gorillaz album was on the way, with work due to commence in September. The group’s currently untitled fifth album will be the first Gorillaz album since 2010’s low-key release, The Fall, which was entirely recorded on Damon Albarn’s iPad when on tour in support of Plastic Beach, which released the same year. When on an Australian TV show, Albarn said, “I’ve just been really, really busy so I haven’t had a chance. I’d love to just get back into that routine of being at home and coming to the studio five days a week.”

Jamie Hewlett, the other non-fictional half of Gorillaz, confirmed in an interview with DIY that work has officially begun on their next album, and they’re aiming to release it sometime next year. Speaking with DIY about the upcoming album, Hewlett said, “I’m working on it at the moment, and it’s going very well. I’m very excited. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m at that phase of experimentation.”

Hewlett is the cartoonist and artist behind Gorillaz’s much-loved fictional members, and he’s recently been sharing some new artwork of the members in anticipation for the new record on his Instagram, which you can see above.
