One of the first artists I covered for Pigeons and Planes was Chicago rapper Kami (then Kami de Chukwu). Almost three years and what feels like a world of difference, Kami and usual partner in crime Joey Purp for their first proper project as Leather Corduroys, Season.

Season feels more like an exciting experiment than a culmination, two young rappers exploring new ideas across a varied production palette. Dashes of oddball humor, unusual song structures, and the ample energy and technical ability Kami and Purp have delivered since their earliest releases keep Season intriguing even when it occasionally falters in some of its left-field moments. Largely a success, it’s a multi-layered listen that warrants more than a few cursory passes, pointing to the duo’s ambition and talent starting to meet at eye level after years of work.
