As the Billboard Music Awards prepare to air on May 23, some of the award winners have already been announced. Among the honorees for the evening, it has just been revealed that Trae Tha Truth will be receiving the second annual Billboard Change Makers Award this year for his philanthropic work and social advocacy.

As described by Billboard, the Change Makers Award pays tribute to “the artist or group that speaks truth to power through their music, celebrity, and community. They are socially conscious, politically aware, active in their community and charitable with time, money and/or influence to improve the lives of others.”

In explaining why Trae would be receiving the award this year, Billboard Music Awards Consulting Producer and Vibe Magazine Editor-In-Chief Datwon Thomas explained that he exemplified all the qualities of a great community leader.

“Trae exemplifies what it means to be the change you want to see,” Thomas said. “He is always in a city near you, helping those in need after natural disasters, fighting for justice after tragic events, and giving supplies to families to make it to another day. His name, ‘Tha Truth’ fits perfectly with who he is as a community activist and we are honored to celebrate his tireless efforts and giving spirit.”

The Houston rapper was also one of the activists arrested in Louisville, Kentucky during protest efforts for Breonna Taylor.

Other award winners this year include Drake, who will be receiving Billboard’s artist of the decade award. The Billboard Music Awards will be hosted by Nick Cannon and broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 23.
