London-based producer kiskadee, aka Jack Chown, is gearing up for a new EP, and judging by its first single, “Hypna”, it sounds as if it’ll be landing at exactly the right time of year.

There’s a driving, danceable energy pushing it forward (a hint at some more club-oriented material he has in the pipeline for later in the year, we’re told), but this feels much more suited to the great outdoors. The melodies are gentle but bright and make the ideal match for the time of year when the days are just starting to get a little longer and the grass isn’t quite as frosty.

In that same spirit, kiskadee has also put together a video to go with the track. The pastoral video, directed by Will Jack Robinson, mixes shots of kiskadee performing the track at Granetz in Jersey, where he grew up, with sweeping aerial drone shots of the sun-glazed countryside.

“I started the kiskadee project in those first weeks of lockdown, making bittersweet beats and electronic soundscapes from voice notes friends and family sent me,” he tells Complex. “As we’ve been able to dance together again, I’ve been keen to blend these melodic sounds with more club-focused electronica as the project moves into its next phase.”

He adds: “It’s been a tricky but incredibly exciting and fulfilling process—and anyway, as the Alan Watts quote says in the middle of ‘Hypna’: “What is the essential element in the creative is the mysterious, the trouble is this if we found out a method to teach creativity, it would no longer be of interest.”

This is the first single from to be taken his forthcoming Believe In Love EP, which is due to land on March 31.
